Texas might exhibit dramatic gambling expansion in the near future, if voters poll their approval for this project. The state Reb. Charlie Geren, R-Fort Worth maintained that he feels quite uneasy about the constant oscillation of this matter and it’s about time the gambling issue should be forwarded to voting so as to come in terms with it once and for all. Otherwise, it will pop up as a panacea, every time Austin has financial difficulties.
Geren and state Sen. Rodney Ellis, D-Houston have proposed to let voter make an amendment of the Texas Constitution in order to set a state gambling committee to license and operate up to 12 casinos. The prospective locations would be along the Gulf Coast and three spots selected by the committee. However, casino establishment is highly dependant upon the approval of voters in the host county. The lawmakers estimate casinos to gross annually close to $2.1 billion for the state’s coffer and about $730 million for local government.
The state Rep. Linda Harper-Brown, an anti-gambling member, who in the last year thwarted the video slot machine project said that money from gambling, easily earned would not be a solution but an illusion and that the consequences in the long run would be far more detrimental to the state.
