One of the biggest illicit gambling dens comprising of 49 members was uncovered this week by the Sarawak police. Several business facilities served as the lodging places for these clandestine organizations. Police assumes that several secrete societies were also part of the gambling den across the city. Gambling was however, not their sole occupation and other illegal matters seem to have been involved such as illicit money lending.
State Deputy Police Commissioner, SAC I Abang Wahap Abang Julai expressed his satisfaction with the operation saying that this, by all means is not the last one and the long term goal is complete illegal gambling elimination as well as elimination of other associated vices. The records of seized members are now being under scrutiny to ascertain whether they had any criminal past.
At 1 am, the shoplot in Muara Tabuan was raided by the police who’ve seized 11 people amidst the "Holo" game. One hour later, 9 people were arrested in a hotel while engaged in a card game Paikow. In both sessions, the police confiscated an undisclosed amount of money, together with some gambling accessories. At another shoplot located on the 3rd Mila Kuching-Serian Road, 29 people were detained, plus four other bookies were arrested for illegal horse racing at a service centre. All the detained have undergone an investigation according to the Section 4 (A) Common Gaming Houses Act 1953S.
