The lawmakers are seeking new funding venues and though unwilling turning to the gambling expenditure solution. The latest budget proposal of Gov. Rod Blagojevich that did not include any casino gambling insinuations provided however, very limited resources for schools, relying too heavily on dubious plans of pension revision and dipping into special state funds. This, however, gave some hope to the proponents of gambling expansion who've sensed a new boon coming their way. Other potential funding sources which could have been considered are too politically risky and not nearly satisfactory in terms of generating enough money.
Gambling is therefore, perceived as one of the more powerful money generators, where people are literally lining up to plank down their financial possessions and casinos gladly accept it cutting out a 70 percent piece of their revenues to the state's benefit. Anita Bedell, executive director of the Illinois Church Action ratified that gambling was not a successful solution for the budget issues in the past, being a volatile source for revenue and moreover, this is not the way she wishes to see the state going.
Senate President, Emil Jones, D-Chicago, a leading gambling proponent contended recently that gambling is the ultimate solution to pump up the state's lean budget. Curtailing is not going to do any good for people who got tired from it over the years, he said. The counter gambling activists have thrown harsh arguments at the Legislature comparing it to a bunch of gambling addicts who need the issue of poor budget as an excuse for promoting gambling expansion.
