Fargo's policy is such that it prohibits non-profit organizations from simultaneous operations at more than two licensed liquor facilities. The city officials were approached by Brad Hemerick who asked to stretch Fargo's boundaries on charitable gambling enterprises from two to three per organization. Monday Commision is set to review the request on its meeting.
The two-site restriction has been enacted since 1981, when gambling guidelines were undertaken. City Attorney Garylle Stewart reported that the legislation of two-site gambling sites could be revised by passing a resolution.
The statute of adjacent Moorhead, Minn allows for charitable gambling facilities to operate up to six sites, provided that the City Council passes a special resolution and Fargo is eager to have at least half as many gambling establishments as its neighbor. Hemerick stated that businesses are seeking for gambling opportunities in organizations but there are none available.
One of the supporters for expanding gambling site limitations is the Fargo Youth Hockey Association. The vice president of the group, Al Hintz said they favor this venture because the operation costs are going up and parents are the ones who have to carry out those expenses.
