Beverly Bowler was charged by Exeter Crown Court for stealing thousands of dollars to feed her gambling habit. She was accused of taking the money from en elderly woman, named Elizabeth Cooper, who had been in her care. It is not yet clear how the defendant made the pensioner sign legal documents that permitted her access to the money. When asked why she robbed Ms. Cooper, Bowler simply answered that Betty (Elizabeth) asked her to. Bowler admitted to gambling away half the money she stole.
Answering the question of her council, of whether she felt entitled to the money, Ms. Bowler is reported saying that she and the old lady had an excellent relationship as Mrs. Cooper even introduced her as her daughter on several occasions. It was on summer of 2002 that Ms Bowler got a power of attorney over Elizabeth Cooper’s money and having no pangs of conscience, she succeeded robbing over 34, 000 pounds in a five months period.
