People in southeast Kansas want gambling! This is the ultimate message voters wish to pass to officials, and they are willing to face all the negative side effects that come along. A gambling plan, which has not gathered enough supporting voices, to pass in Senate, if passed, would allow casinos at five resorts across the state. The estimated revenues from possible gambling operations amount t to annual $150 million in the first year and $200 million in the following year.
Legislators, however, maintained that whether the gambling issue passes or stalls is linked to a totally unrelated matter which is currently discussed by the state Supreme Court. It is the Court’s ruling on a new school funding plan that would most likely determine the gambling deployment. Tom Moody, the Crawford County Commissioner contended that people who want to gamble will do it irrespective of Court’s decision and if it’s not going to be Kansas it’ll be some place else.
Lawmakers would be pushed to uphold the gambling plan, if and only if the court decides that the proposed school funding package of $125 million in state aid is not suffice to cover the needs
