According to a number of sources, a new breed of criminals is arising with the growing popularity of gambling industry. Though the charges remain virtually the same the causes inducing a person to act in this way have slightly diverted from the traditional path. Interestingly enough, individuals who have never been associated with illicit activities, were starting to appear before the judge, charged with theft and fraud, because of their gambling addiction.
The government was accused in the unwillingness to investigate further the relation between gambling and crime for fear of losing a large slice of proceeds it provides. It seems that there is a perpetual conflict between the law enforcement and the desire to capitalize on money yielded from gambling operations.
An attempt was made to conduct a study, probing the correlation between these domains. Unfortunately, it was shoved onto the highest drawer due to collapse of the Gambling Research Panel, last year. Though everyone agrees that gambling prompts crime flourish and other social issues, senior Government ranks are still unsure whether the research project should be further pursued. Kerrie Cross, the Gambling Advocate, in charge of the government research contended that she thinks it is inappropriate for her to undertake a study on crime and gambling.
