There are some that believe that Texas is loosing much of its power to the neighboring states who allow gambling activities. Critics argue that those states have a crippling economy because of the gambling, and legalizing it would be a grave mistake that might lead to detrimental consequences.
Statistics have shown that for every yielded dollar, the state will end up paying $3 in increased social costs, such as bankruptcy, domestic violence, and child abuse. The Republican Party of Texas will be lobbying the anti-gambling campaigns at the capitol.
Lawmakers who are up for gambling say video slots would be one way to make up for a budget deficit needed for funding schools. Both Republican and Democrats have bills favoring gambling and right now they are in committee. Only the House vote will put the bill on the ballot for the voters to decide.
