Gambling in Beijing has been barred after the 1949 Communist revolution, but it was resurrected in some sense, due to the loosening of social controls over the recent years. During this period Beijing gamblers have come to be the most wanted customers in Macau and Las Vegas casinos.
This hyper gambling was under the imminent danger and ultimately resulted in a major raid on various gambling lairs. Consequently, mainland casinos, bordering with Russia and Burma have been shut down. Eighty two Burmese casinos were curbed and severely wounded by the shortage of mainland gamblers. Beijing has recently been unrelenting towards illegal gambling activities, which are deemed to strongly relate to official corruption, organized crime and other social ailments.
About 48,000 gambling and online gambling cases have been uncovered by the police; 230 million yuanm (HK $216.9 million) were impounded, and 15,000 people had been arrested. This has apparently deterred many mainlanders away from the poorly regulated border casinos.
